Panchgani literally means five hills; this idyllic hilly resort is just 19kms from Mahabaleshwar and perched at an altitude of 1334 mts on the Western Ghats in Maharashtra. With walkways thickly shaded with lush trees and verdant vegetation, Panchgani is tourists' delight.
You can mount a horse and canter along the uncharted routes through
hidden lovers' lanes to Kamalgad Fort. There is stunning Krishna river
on the one side and coastal plains on the other that leaves tourists
agape in wonder.
Panchgani harbors an old world charm which reflects in the architecture
of the British buildings, the Parsi houses and the boarding houses that
have been around for a century or more. You can spend hours in a row at
the bazaar in Panchgani that finds one at peace while sifting through
quite yet bustling market place.
Apart from the unhurried pace of life at Panchgani there are many more
spots that can savored at length. Sydney Point is one among them.
Situated on a small hillock facing the Krishna Valley, you can witness
the sparkling waters of the Dhom Dam and Pandavgad and Mandhardeo are
also easily seen.
Table Land is situated around 60 mts high, which is a flat large
expanse of laterite rock, supposedly the second longest mountain plateau
in Asia. There are some spacious caves that can be seen from here and
one of them is Devil's Kitchen. Parsi Point overlooks the Krishna valley
and Dhom Dam.
At Panchgani you can enjoy the scooter boats and speedboats. Sporting
in Krishna river stream is a wonderful experience. The picturesque
Lingmala Falls in Mahabaleshwar has unbroken stream of water that
precipitates over the face of a steep cliff during the Monsoons
sometimes sparkling with rainbow colors in circle. About 10kms from
Panchgani are the Rajapuri Caves where a small local fair is held at the
time of harvest.
