being a part of the kingship of Asoka and then coming under Silhara
dynasty in 1343, later being annexed by the kingdom of Gujarat. In 1534,
the Portuguese took over the region and later ceded to Charles II in the
form of dowry when he married Catherine de Braganza. In 1668 the region
came under the reign of British East India Company on lease.
The region of Navi Mumbai was mostly countryside when in 1970s the area
came under the arc light of development when the City & Development
Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (CIDCO) was formed to meet the
infrastructural needs of the budding metropolis of Navi Mumbai. And thus
dawned a new city that was developed as a series of nodes or small
townships strung along with an efficient Mass Transport System in the
form of Commuter Railway Network that connects to Mumbai. There are 14
nodes till date, these are - Airoli, Ghansoli, Kopar Khairane, Vashi,
Sanpada, Nerul, CBD Belapur, Kharghar, Kalamboli, Jui Kamothe, New
Panvel, Ulwe, Pushpak and Dronagiri.
